Nilbhringadi Tailam for Hair: Ayurveda's Approach to Hair Fall & Premature Greying
Bhringraj — sometimes called "keshraja," or king of hair, in classical Ayurvedic texts — is one of the most referenced herbs in traditional Indian hair care. Nilbhringadi Tailam is a hair oil built around this herb, traditionally infused into a base of nourishing oils and used for scalp massage, or Shiroabhyanga. The traditional use case is straightforward: warm oil, massaged into the scalp, is thought to support scalp health, hair strength and a sense of calm that comes with the ritual of an oil massage itself. Many people also associate consistent bhringraj oil use with slowing premature greying, though — like most traditional wellness practices — results vary from person to person and depend on a lot of other factors too, including genetics, stress, diet and overall health. A simple way to use Vatsa Nilbhringadi Tailam: warm a small amount between your palms or in a bowl of hot water (never microwave oil directly), and massage it into your scalp using your fingertips in slow, circular motions for 5–10 minutes. Leave it in for at least an hour — overnight, if your pillowcase can take it — before washing out with a mild shampoo. Two to three times a week is a reasonable starting routine. Hair fall has genuine underlying causes worth ruling out, particularly a sudden increase in shedding — thyroid imbalances, iron deficiency, postpartum changes, and stress are common ones. Oil massage is a supportive, traditional practice, not a diagnosis or treatment for these — if you're experiencing significant or sudden hair loss, it's worth speaking with a physician. You'll find Vatsa Nilbhringadi Tailam on our Products page, alongside the rest of our Ayurvedic skincare and haircare range.
